Asus F3 (F3SA) Notebook Review - Three Months In

Pretty happy with this machine. It's an Asus F3SA-A1. I bought it at PC Village. I upgraded it from 1GB of memory to 4GB immediately. I notice some places show it as a 512MB 2600 HD video card - I think it's actually 256MB. ATI Catalyst says 512MB but Xorg verbose probing implies it's 256MB. From Xorg.0.log: (**) fglrx(0): ATI GART size: 256 MB .

I initially did some installs of Fedora 7 , Windows XP , Fedora 8, Ubuntu 7.10 and Windows Vista. I was surprised to find Linux had more drivers installed and working "out-of-the-box". On Linux I had to install the webcam driver and video driver myself. On Windows I had to install @15 packages to get the all hardware working, and many devices have no Windows XP driver.

Pros

- Fast dualcore CPU with VT, running several BSD and Linux windows using Linux KVM and QEMU is quite smooth. You can open up Vista but its a major pain thanks to Asus' stupid non-standard Vista disc they provide. I basically gave up on Vista for now. XP runs fine though.
- Light compared to previous "power" laptop I had been using, its 2-3lbs lighter and noticeably thinner.
- keyboard is pretty good, no major issues adapting. No small keys.
- ports easy to access and the SD slot is great.
- screen looks pretty good for a notebook.
Cons in order of concern
- Low resolution screen. I think my new minimum is 1600x1050 or higher for a 15" screen.
- Screen sucks compared to a CRT or decent desktop LCD. Contrast is terrible.
- Touchpad drives you nuts when typing alot. It has a toggler so its not too bad. A little nub mouse would be nice.
- Too many ports near where a mouse sits. The mouse cord is always getting caught up in ethernet and power cables. If using eSATA/1394/video it gets really bad. Not sure there is a place they could easily move these without ditching the optical drive.
- Optical drive is a waste of power, I wish a hard drive slot was there and/or a dummy cover could be put in place.
- Screen sucks up dust like a magnet. So well it actually sucks dust off the wiping cloth as you're clearing off dust.
- The paint? on the body where palms touch it is wearing off badly.
- Speakers sound crappy. Pretty bad compared to some dell XPS ones I have tried lately.
- Intel Robson "Turbo Memory" appears to be useless under Linux.
- The right palm rest gets pretty hot. I think the video card is under it.
